Veterinary Surgeon

After wanting to be a vet since I was four years old, I went straight from college to vet school and qualified from Liverpool in July 2012. I moved from my home in West Sussex to this area to work and after gaining a good year of experience at my previous job, I started work at The Veterinary Centre. I have now been here since July 2013 and haven't looked back since – it is a lovely place to work and all of the vets and nurses here are very good at what they do.

I work mainly at Henley where my time is split between consulting, operating and looking after the inpatients. I also do a few afternoons a week at the Twyford branch which I really enjoy. I love all aspects of small animal veterinary science including consulting and in patient care, but surgery has always been my big interest. I enjoy learning new techniques and am hoping to do a certificate in surgery one day that will enable me to perform more complex surgeries here at Henley.

I live near Watlington with my partner Rich, who is a TV editor. We have a very cute Labrador called 'Bernie' who has grown up here at Henley and is now nearly 5 months old. He is turning out to be a lovely dog and is very trainable. On my lunch breaks, he loves to go for runs in the woods and swims in the Thames, and when I am not at work we go for long walks in the hills. We also have a very chatty and extremely pretty Bengal cat called 'Dee Dee' who was rescued from a life in a cage. Having never been outside in her life, she now enjoys exploring the great outdoors and bringing us lots of 'presents'! She likes to have conversations and is particularly chatty if food is involved.. although she hasn't quite realised that eating and talking at the same time doesn't really work (with amusing results)! To finish off our menagerie we have a Tortoise called 'Murdock' who was found when Rich was mowing his parent's lawn and something went 'clunk' – fortunately he survived with only minor injuries and has been with Rich ever since. He is in fact a girl but Rich had got so used to saying 'he' that it has stuck, even after I revealed his true sex!

Outside of work I enjoy doing triathlons and recently competed in the Henley Triathlon, winning my age group (the short one, not the really long one!!) – when Bernie is old enough I am hoping he will be able to come running training with me. I also love walking and am enjoying living in the Chilterns as there are so many lovely places here to walk. I am also enjoying having my own garden for the first time and spend lots of time out there when the weather is nice. When I have the time, I love to go up to The Lake District and often go backpacking and wild camping with my friends. I also enjoy travelling and spent a month in South Africa working with large game which was amazing – I would love to go back one day. I used to have a horse that I enjoyed eventing on but since qualifying from vet school I have not had time for this – I am hoping to find nice horse to help with and ride soon as I do miss it a lot!
