I found the veterinary profession following
a period in the accountancy world. It continues to be rewarding
on every level.
Having travelled around the globe with my parents, mostly
in the oil exploration business, I studied in numerous schools
in equally numerous countries ending up in Plymouth for a
Geography and Geology degree. That was followed by a foray
into Mathematics and a short period as a self employed artist.
Lastly, an accountancy threshold qualification which gained
me employment in an accountancy firm in Cornwall. After five
years of work and study I left to join a local veterinary
business for a few months to ascertain employment options
in the South West but have stayed in the veterinary profession
Having made our home in Plymouth and the children coming
along, I spent 29 years building up The Veterinary Hospital
Group. During that time I hired a number of veterinary surgeons
including Fiona. Fiona, Ian and eventually 'little' Arthur
stayed in Plymouth until the move to Henley-on-Thames and
the family have become life long friends. So the decision
to join Fiona in ownership of The Veterinary Centre was very
During those early days I was part of a small group who set
up the Veterinary Practice Management Association (VPMA) which
was set up as, and remains, the veterinary profession's premier
management group. As part of that I was also instrumental
in setting up the Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management
(CVPM). I was on the both Committees in the usual variety
of roles for some ten years dropping out after my Senior Vice
In my early years at The Vet Hospital I also joined the local
RSPCA branch and remained with them for about 14 years as
Treasurer and Chair.
I continue as Chair of Governors at a local secondary school
and have been in place since my children attended that school.
Hobbies have taken a bit of a back seat but involve mostly
outdoor stuff like walking and gardening and my wife and I
also run an allotment. No current pets, largely through the
hectic life with a big scattered family, I was given a German
Shepherd Dog on the day I was born and have enjoyed numerous
dogs, cats and all the usual small furries over the years.
Explaining to the kids why our dearly loved cat had criminal
tendencies to our goldfish was one of many interesting learning
