 Hanno Payne
Director and Business Manager

I found the veterinary profession following a period in the accountancy world. It continues to be rewarding on every level.
Having travelled around the globe with my parents, mostly in the oil exploration business, I studied in numerous schools in equally numerous countries ending up in Plymouth for a Geography and Geology degree. That was followed by a foray into Mathematics and a short period as a self employed artist. Lastly, an accountancy threshold qualification which gained me employment in an accountancy firm in Cornwall. After five years of work and study I left to join a local veterinary business for a few months to ascertain employment options in the South West but have stayed in the veterinary profession ever since.

Having made our home in Plymouth and the children coming along, I spent 29 years building up The Veterinary Hospital Group. During that time I hired a number of veterinary surgeons including Fiona. Fiona, Ian and eventually 'little' Arthur stayed in Plymouth until the move to Henley-on-Thames and the family have become life long friends. So the decision to join Fiona in ownership of The Veterinary Centre was very easy.

During those early days I was part of a small group who set up the Veterinary Practice Management Association (VPMA) which was set up as, and remains, the veterinary profession's premier management group. As part of that I was also instrumental in setting up the Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management (CVPM). I was on the both Committees in the usual variety of roles for some ten years dropping out after my Senior Vice President year.
In my early years at The Vet Hospital I also joined the local RSPCA branch and remained with them for about 14 years as Treasurer and Chair.
I continue as Chair of Governors at a local secondary school and have been in place since my children attended that school.

Hobbies have taken a bit of a back seat but involve mostly outdoor stuff like walking and gardening and my wife and I also run an allotment. No current pets, largely through the hectic life with a big scattered family, I was given a German Shepherd Dog on the day I was born and have enjoyed numerous dogs, cats and all the usual small furries over the years. Explaining to the kids why our dearly loved cat had criminal tendencies to our goldfish was one of many interesting learning experiences!
